Football at West Point goes back to 1890.
Through the early decades of the program, the academy's football team garnered the nickname "Black Knights of the Hudson" due to the predominate black color of its uniforms set against the castle-like backdrop of West Point's formidable buildings. This nickname has since been officially shortened to "Black Knights" which today refers to all of Army West Point's athletic squads.
