Desert Boots have a somewhat complicated history—not developed specifically by any one company or country, they’re now most often associated with English troops deployed in the hotter and more arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa during the second World War. With a silhouette based on the already-existing Chukka Boot, the specific style of shoe that would become the Desert Boot was an adaptation of South African military shoes, further refined and tweaked by cobblers and merchants around Cairo at the request of Afrikaner colonial troops. Produced by local merchants in these regions, these suede chukka-style boots were quickly identified as superior to the “standard” leather military boots that Europeans brought with them and were eventually adopted on a wider scale. The standout features of the Desert Boot style include a low-profile silhouette, breathable suede uppers, stitchdown construction, and a soft crepe sole, making these a near-perfect boot for hot and dry climates. John Lofgren has a personal story about these: British-made desert boots were his dad’s favorite footwear in the 1950s, and his own favorite in the 1980s, when the style was adopted by the “mod” subculture. He wanted a more robust, completely ethical, and better-made version than the mainstream options on the market today, so he developed his own model in the late 2010s. These feature Japanese-tanned cowhide suede, genuine crepe soles, and a stitchdown construction. The stitchdown construction is part of the legendary comfort of the desert boot, allowing the shoe to mold completely to your foot. Double-needle stitching has been added to high-stress areas of the boots for greater longevity. Choose 0.5 size smaller than your Brannock device size.
