The Showboats entered the USFL as an expansion team for the 1984 season. L
ike most of the USFL's other southern-market teams, they were a hit at the box office, with attendance numbers continuing to grow as the '84 season progressed and into 1985, where they had better luck on the field, making the playoffs in the USFL's third and final year.
