Originally the Memphis Pros (arguable the least creative team in professional sports), In
1972, the team was purchased by Charles O. Finley
, who also owned the Oakland A's and former NHL team Calfornia Golden Seals. In an attempt to drive some interest, they hosted a
"Rename the Team" contest, with the TAMs winning the vote.
The nickname was an acronym for
