We like Lyocell because its plant-based rather than petroleum-based. It's made by dissolving organic pulp (like wood, bamboo, etc.) to create cellulose fibers, which is spun into thread and woven into fabric. While it still needs chemicals and water, Lyocell is made in a closed loop system so most of the solvent can be reused. Tencel™ is a brand of Lyocell which uses sustainably sourced wood fibers that are processed in a nontoxic organic solvent. According to tencel.com, Tencel™ Lyocell has a 99% solvent recovery and their fabrics are certified as biodegradable.
