Dating back to the Revolutionary War period when it was originally referenced by Benjamin Franklin as the symbol of American spirit, this flag represented the American defiance as we fought for our independence. Colonel Christopher Gadsden of the Continental Marines brought this flag out on the water for our country's first naval mission and presented it to the Commodore of the Navy to fly in the formation.
