Border Jersey series knitted with #16 single yarn that has been dyed in indigo and
then 'air spun' where the power of air is used to twist and spin the yarns. Using this method allows us to spin yarn with thick, short-staple fibers (usually a very difficult thing to accomplish) and results in a slubby yarn that contains a bit of air,
giving it a kind of dry texture.
The fabric is then subjected to a traditional kind of 'half dying' discharge process called "Bassen" which is traditionally used to dye kimono in Kyoto (called Kyo Yuzen).
Through this process, the base color is somewhat removed and you get a border in which two different indigo colors are expressed. After the discharge bleaching agent is removed, the pattern itself is fixed by steaming which really reveals the full beautify of the pattern and fabric. From start to finish, this is a very time and labor-intensive process, but the resulting fabric is gorgeous and will age and fade with time and wear, just like jeans.
