The original model, officially known as the Flyer’s Helmet Bag Type HGU-2/P, became standard issue across both Air Force and Navy aviation units during the Cold War. Its purpose was purely functional: a lightweight, flat bag that could safely hold a helmet while preventing damage to the fragile visor and communication equipment used in flight. Made from strong nylon canvas lined with a thin insulating layer, the bag was engineered to resist moisture and abrasion. Its large main compartment and twin front pockets provided ample space for flight gear and navigation documents.
