The sub reached the North Pole, on the 6th April 1969, and surfaced there in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary's 1909 arrival, becoming the first American to do so. Beneath Arctic ice and armed with the epoch's advanced navigation technology, it deftly navigated polar waters, revealing a new strategic dimension for naval operations.
