The Green Underbrim
Around 1858, the Brooklyn Excelsiors introduced the progenitor of the modern baseball cap, with its round crown and brief brim indebted to the jockey’s headgear. Soon Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago articulated their own takes on the form, and the cap evolved toward a common standard. With a ubiquitous design in place, manufacturers sought out ways to improve the performance of their caps and a green underbrim was adopted as it was considered to be relaxing on the eyes, reducing glare and lessening distraction from the playing field.
