The Roberts family owned the site that featured a home designed by renowned architect Paul Williams. Previously the land was bought in 1865 by Matthew Keller who built a stone cottage in the canyon as part of his Rancho Malibu. The structure is believed to be the oldest existing stone building in Malibu. Trails link various caves and a waterfall with ancient Chumash burial sites. Populated with wildflowers and rattlesnakes, the trails became popular in the 1980s with hikers and joggers after the Roberts house burned down and the land was sold to the State of California.
