Based on his 1972 BBC series and comprised of 7 essays, 3 of which are entirely pictorial, John Berger’s Ways of Seeing is a seminal work which examines how we view art. Now described as “revolutionary”, the book has contributed to feminist readings of popular culture, through essays that focus particularly on how women are portrayed in advertisements and oil paintings. Berger has had a profound influence on the popular understanding of art and the visual image. In 1978 Ways of Seeing was presented as an exhibition in Los Angeles at the pop up Berger Gallery.
