"If you're someone who fervently believes that killing is wrong and that all humans are equal, then you are part of Nixon's 'immoral subculture', and so am I." - Joan Didion During his 1968 Presidential campaign, Richard Nixon made an infamous speech in which he appealed to what he later called the "silent majority" of socially conservative Americans who disliked the hippie counterculture and anti war demonstrations. In it, he referred to the "immoral subculture now permeating American society", going on to call out the "....rising tide of drug fuelled protestors, black power groups, extreme feminists and homosexuals". Subsequently the same 'immoral subculture' rhetoric was used by the media over the following 3 decades to describe the punk movement, skateboarding, gay rights activists, Heavy Metal and Hip Hop among others.
