During the late 1970's the seemingly innocuous Malibu Jogging Club was actually a recruitment hub for the Synanon cult. Synanon was extremely powerful by this point, owning $7 million in real estate in California alone, boasting a fleet of aeroplanes and its own army known as the 'Imperial Marines'. During the 70's it branched out of 'addiction therapy' and into 'education and life coaching', recruiting wealthy new members from the Malibu area to its Santa Monica compound.
