While the intention of Apocalypse Now was to hold a mirror to a divided nation unable to see the insanity it creates, the shoot itself was permeated with a similar yet drug fuelled insanity that mirrored that of the Vietnam War itself. Sheen arrived on set in the grip of a severe alcohol addiction, while Sam Bottoms who played surfer Lance B Johnson maintained a constant high on LSD and magic mushrooms and the legendary Dennis Hopper kept up a daily regimen of drugs and alcohol that would kill a horse: a case of beer, a half gallon of liquor, and three ounces of cocaine. The remote jungle location, nightly crew parties and an abundance of narcotics meant the shoot quickly descended into madness.
