Opening its doors in 1978, 'Wizards & Warriors' was Los Angeles’ first Role Playing Games store and meeting place for the burgeoning west coast scene. The immediate success of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 meant that by 1978 there was a new underground youth subculture of tabletop gamers looking for likeminded people.
As featured in the March 1978 issue of Pacifica Folio, 'Wizards & Warriors' was cited as the west coast bastion of this new scene, it's slogan of 'Wine, Weed & Warrior Women' demonstrating that, like those before it, it also incorporated, “....the music and recreational activities of the era. The tentacles and tenets of hippydom that had reverberated all around the world have long since faded and been replaced by long-hair rock bands who happen to smoke pot and take mushrooms, drawing imagery and iconography from Tolkien and Dungeons & Dragons."
