During the 20th century Los Angeles, and California itself, was a hotbed of new-age spiritualism and occult fascination. It became the perfect setting for the wide resurgence of occult activity in the late 1960s. In a 1972 issue of Pacifca Folio California is described as, “....a state with a long, sometimes sordid history of new religions, experimental spirituality, far-out cults, and psychedelic occult activity. From the Crowley worshipping OTO offshoot Agape Lodge to the financial and cultural behemoth of the Esalen Institute to the esoteric order of Rosicrucians and the sex-crazed, psychedelic witches of the Big Sur coven, the occult in California wears a number of guises.
