The 1980 "miracle" U.S. team is undoubtedly the most famous team, and most defining moment in the history of American hockey. But an earlier generation of Americans pulled off a similar stunning upset that has been nearly forgotten and, by comparison, remains largely unknown.
The 1960 U.S. hockey team
went undefeated (7-0-0) and just like the team from 1980, defeated the Soviet Union in the semifinal before winning the gold in
Squaw Valley.
