Story
The lion represents Saint Mark the Evangelist, the patron of saint of Venice. According to legend, in the 9th century, Venetian merchants smuggled Saint Mark's relics from Alexandria to Venice. On their journey, a storm nearly destroyed their ship -- until it miraculously calmed, believed to be Saint Mark protecting them. Upon safely returning, they built the magnificent St. Mark's Basilica to house the relics, and from that point forward, the winged lion become Venice's guardian.
