Product Description

Inspired by the rugged history of rock climbing and rugby, this stylish shirt combines functionality with heritage. Crafted from 100% heavy cotton jersey, it features traditional British school colors and rubber buttons, perfect for both casual and outdoor wear. Originally embraced by the climbing community in the 1970s, its durable fabric ensures comfort and resilience on rough terrain. A nod to the legendary Wakefield Trinity rugby team, this piece embodies both style and sporty elegance. From the brand: During the 1970s, rock climbing gained popularity in California, and climbers began prioritising functionality in their clothing. Rugby shirts - originally imported from England, New Zealand, and other countries - were quickly embraced by the climbing community. Commonly found in thrift shops, these shirts became highly sought after due to their thick, durable fabric, which made them ideal for the rigours of rough terrain. The growing demand eventually led many outdoor brands to develop their own versions, adapting the design specifically for climbing and outdoor use. This particular colorway draws inspiration from traditional British school and rugby team colours, interpreted through the kit of West Yorkshire’s Wakefield Trinity team, also known as the “Dreadnoughts” - a nickname chosen to reflect their style of play and skilled performance on the roughest Northern pitches, as they “dread nowt.” Founded in 1873, Wakefield Trinity is one of the oldest rugby league clubs in the world. They were among the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, marking the split from rugby union and the birth of rugby league. Their striped shirt was worn during iconic matches such as the 1968 Challenge Cup Final against Leeds, remembered as the “Watersplash Final” due to the near-unplayable, rain-soaked pitch. Torrential downpours the day before and during the game left the field waterlogged, later fuelling a long-standing rivalry between the two sides. In the final moments of this match, Trinity’s Don Fox had the chance to secure a win with a simple conversion from in front of the posts, but slipped in the mud and sliced the ball wide. The whistle blew immediately after, sealing a one-point victory for Leeds. Despite this heartbreaking climax, Wakefield Trinity’s Don Fox would still earn Don Fox man of the match and claim the Lance Todd Trophy. 100% Cotton Heavy Cotton Jersey Rubber Buttons Made in Japan
