A 3x1 weave is denim in its original form, where 3 warp threads are used for each weft thread. This gives the fabric a very nice vertical fading potential, as well as some subtle crosshatching texture upon closer inspection. This type of denim is quite authentic to vintage workwear, where lighter fabrics were much more commonplace than the heavyweight nature of today's raw and selvedge denims - in fact, light to midweight denim is much more durable than one might expect when comparing to heavy weight fabrics, offering a similarly long lifespan.
