The design of the Mountaineer Down Jacket is an eclectic mix of the sheepskin flight jacket worn by the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1942, known as the Alaskan Jacket, and the rugged mountain jackets used by mountain troops. As aircraft in those days were not sufficiently pressurised, the Alaskan Jacket was specifically made for the extreme cold of Alaska, where temperatures could plummet to -50 degrees Celsius.
